“The Evolution of Contemporary Psychoanalysis”
Dr. Shapiro, from UC, San Diego, School of Medicine will discuss the role of insight and of relationship in psychoanalysis, as well as the place of Interpersonal Psychiatry in the evolution of contemporary psychoanalysis. The new (2008) addition of his popular text Talking with Patients takes a very practical clinical approach. A “Meet the Author” conversation is before the presentation. In the afternoon he will present: “The Psychoanalytic Process -- and What is it that Causes Change?,” discussing the unconscious from a neuroscience perspective, the concept of mentalization, and the role of self disclosure in psychoanalysis.

“Nell: A Bridge to the Amputated Self - The Impact of Immigration on the Continuity and Discontinuity of Self”
Dr. Ipp, originally from South Africa, now from Toronto, will give the keynote address for the American Psychological Association conference held there in ? and is ?past pres of IARPP (International Assoc. for Relational Psychoanalysis). She will present to us her international paper: featured in Psychoanalytic Dialogues; the entire issue to be devoted to this case presentation and to the various articles discussing it. In the afternoon she will discuss: Current Perspectives in Relational Psychoanalysis: Theoretical and Clinical Considerations.

“Two Approaches to Psychotherapy: Traditional Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Intersubjective Oriented Psychotherapy, With an Illustrative Case”
Dr. Buirski, Dean of Grad. School of Professional Psychology at U. of Denver, clin. professor of psychiatry at U. of Colorado Health Sciences Center, is affiliated with the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the author of Making Sense Together, and editor of New Developments(2007). Having written about clinical implications of the analyst’s technique and theory, he has agreed to a “Meet the Author” Conversation: ‘General Principles of an Intersubjective Systems Sensibility’ prior to the main presentation. In the afternoon, he will discuss: The Innocent Analyst or the Implicated Analyst, As Illustrated by a Critique of a Published Case.

“Why the Analyst Needs to Change”
Dr. Slavin, a postmodern, “deep” thinker, on faculty, co-founder and director, of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis, co-authored The Adaptive Design of the Human Psyche -- Psychoanalysis Evolutionary Biology, and the Therapeutic Process. (Review: “towards a more unified psychoanalytic theory that takes us beyond the dichotomous positions that have haunted psychoanalysis for nearly a century... also very much a clinical book…will change every therapist’s stance.”) There will be a “Meet the Author” pre-session: “Basic Concepts in Contemporary Self and Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy,” and in the afternoon: “The Search for Realness and Reciprocity in the Therapeutic Relationship.”

Dr. Orange was one of our most popular speakers a few years ago, and we are fortunate to have her return to talk with us. She is a philosopher and psychoanalyst, and writes extensively with Stolorow and Atwood on Intersubjectivity. There will be a morning and an afternoon, and perhaps a pre-session “Conversation with..”.”
